In New York City, we have been enjoying an unseasonable summer. The hot days have been blistering; we’ve all had to deal with sporadic rainstorms and an amalgamation of both humid and chilly nights. But as the summer months come to an end we must look to the future. Despite the sporadic nature of New York City weather, we can all expect the temperature to drop and the number of layers New Yorkers are wearing to increase. So the new item to invest in for this coming season are fall jackets and coats.
SUPERSIZE YOUR ORDER: This fall, the combination of oversized, designer-chic coats is this writers pick for your strut down fifth avenue. The combination of dualistic structure allows you to stay ahead of the fashion pack while the wearability keeps you within the practical domain. You could even potentially opt for a bold color to stand out amongst the throng of blacks and greys that will swarm the streets without fail. When buying the coat remember the age-old adage: Big certainly IS beautiful.
AIN’T NOTHING WRONG WITH CLASSIC VANILLA:
The options for coats and jacket styles this coming season is much akin to a trip to Baskin-Robbins. There are so many variations and styles (flavors), but sometimes at the end of the day, it never hurts to stick with good ol’ vanilla. On that trail of thought, take a look at this classically designed coat featured here in the Ralph Lauren catwalk show. Even though you may opt for this classic silhouette, you can team it up, much like the oversized coat, with bold colors or patterns (animal prints) in order to stand out in the colorless crowd and skies.
WANT TO SHOW OFF YOUR SHAPE? TOGGLE IT –
The toggle coat was not something I paid much attention to since wearing my own version of this coat to the playground as a child. There have been many iterations of said design, however Givenchy has decided to kick down your front door and bust these babies down your throat in a very in your face kind of way. As seen in the photo, the toggle coat has the potential to keep the layers you’re wearing beneath you in check by accentuating your frame and giving you a ‘badass’ attitude. Couple it with your strut through these mean New York streets and watch the crowd’s part as you approach.
APPARENTLY IF IT AIN’T BROKE, YOU CAN NOT ONLY FIX IT BUT MAKE IT BETTER:
It is my belief that the person who invented the phrase: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” was one lazy son-of-a-bitch. I say this because if something is not broken, it doesn’t necessarily need to be fixed, but it can be better designed and in certain circumstances, even perfected. Enter, the classic rainy day favorite, the trench. The perfect example of this revolutionization of the age old adage is the trench released by Burberry Prorsum, which now includes leather trimmings in the design. It wasn’t broke before and it’s even better now. Another one to keep an eye out for is the Phillip Lim cape trench.
ANDROGENY BY DESIGN: THE BLAZER
Structure, structure, structure. Three words (identical in spelling and funnily enough, meaning) can describe the way blazers were put forth in the Isabel Marant show as seen below. All fall blazers that will be coming your way take inspiration from classic male design from seasons past. Despite this adaptation, all blazers still retain their feminine silhouette however the touch of male inspiration acts to provide a slight androgynous edge to the overall execution.
BIKER-CHIC CHICK –
Do me a favour. Close your eyes for 10 seconds and think back to your youth, namely when you were in your late teens to early twenties. You were a little rebel, weren’t you? Even the most mature of you would have had a rebellious streak that you now think of fondly as a time you would never change. Well, here’s your chance to relive the unruly days of your golden years. If you’re currently in your late teens to mid twenties, what the hell are you doing in front of a computer/tablet/smart phone? You should be out wrecking havoc. While you’re at it, you may as well dress the part with the timely biker look that has been spun off by many reputable names this season including: Phillip Lim, Yves Saint Laurent and Altuzarra (the later featured in the photograph below). Wear something that shows you were defiant once upon a time, or plan to be in the near future.
